Global south movements fought for years for the climate loss and damage fund agreed at COP27. Now rich highly polluting countries are trying to deny them justice.
The US and other global north countries are trying to put the World Bank, which they control, in charge of the fund. Much of the money would be loaned, rather than given to those with a right to it. The global south would be even more burdened by debt.
The rich world is also trying to stop lots of climate-vulnerable countries from accessing the fund. Even Pakistan, which was devastated by extreme flash flooding last year, wouldn’t qualify.
This isn’t climate justice. It’s climate colonialism.
The UK has failed to stand up for climate justice in the negotiations so far. COP28 is nearly here and time is running out.
Please demand that our government stands up for climate justice and demands a strong loss and damage fund ahead of COP28.
