Around the world, despite public funding to research and develop medicines, the prices for drugs are often set so high by pharma corporations, that many countries across the world can’t afford them. Even the NHS has to ration access in some cases. Our current system allows big pharma to privatise and patent medicines, leaving corporate giants to decide who gets them and for how much.
But big pharma’s endless greed has not gone unnoticed. Campaigners, scientists and some decision makers are fighting back. In India campaigners recently won a major battle to ensure a key tuberculosis drug will now be affordable, and in the US President Biden has taken action to drastically reduce the cost of insulin for diabetes patients. Even here in the UK the tide is turning, as the government seems ready to stand up to big pharma’s demands to add a whopping £2.5 billion to the NHS’ annual medicines bill.
Your donation will help the campaign for a better pharmaceutical system by championing alternatives, lobbying for political support and mobilising people to stand up against big pharma’s bullying tactics.
Together we are getting closer to a cooperative, democratic global healthcare system. One where monopoly power is taken out of big pharma hands and global south countries have control over medicine production and healthcare essentials.
