US pharma giant Pfizer has produced a Covid-19 vaccine with very promising early test results. But in a global emergency, one company alone cannot supply the world. Yet Pfizer and their partner BioNtech are keeping the vaccine to themselves to maximise their profits.
What’s more, existing deals with rich country governments mean nearly all of the 1.4 billion doses Pfizer says it can produce by the end of 2021 have already been bought up, leaving lower-income countries without.
Any successful vaccine must be distributed according to need, not wealth. Pfizer should be sharing its vaccine through the World Health Organisation to help produce enough for everyone, everywhere, not putting the pursuit of profit ahead of human lives.
Tell Pfizer and BioNTech to share their vaccine with the world now.
